***Be aware to turn your wheels to the curb if parked on the street, or you will get ticketed!***

This Cowles Mountain trailhead is rocky, dusty, and mostly consists of somewhat narrow, inclined switchbacks. There is some climbing involved and the rocks can get steep.
Not ideal for anyone with knee and leg weakness.

The views are beautiful of the mountains, nearby lake, golf course, & city all the way up, and the top has a magnificent 360 degree overlook of the surrounding area, Black Mountain, downtown and all the way to the ocean!

If you're looking for a serene walk in nature, go during off-peak hours (very early morning, late afternoon, or late night) otherwise it is typically packed with hikers, runners, dogs, and kids. Lots of people play music as they hike up, and its not uncommon to smell ganja in the air.

Bring water, a hat, sunglasses, and non-toxic sunscreen, as it is a longer hike than what it looks like from below due to the switchbacks. Use the public restroom in the parking lot prior to your hike.

Day & night, there may be rattlesnakes or garter snakes, bunnies, squirrels, mice, hawks, vultures, and I've even seen a Great Horned Owl swoop right over my head! So amazing :)

So respect the wild life by observing from afar. And of course, stay on the trail, take nothing away & leave no trace or trash :)

To make sure you don't slip and fall on rocks due to the dust, be careful and cautious to keep a sure footing, and you will do great.

    Enjoy the mountain escalation!

I'll hike this mountain at least once a year. I'll start scared then look up and see how far I still have to go. 30 minutes later, I see the beauty that this mountain has to offer. I'll touch the plaque each time just to feel some sort of accomplishment. Stay for a while, enjoy the views, look down, then smile because I made it. When it's time to go down, I start thinking about food because now I'm hungry from hiking this beautiful mountain.

See you next time Mr. Cowles.
