  Phil was one of the best surf instructors I've had, and I've taken surf lessons in San Francisco, two spots in SoCal, and Hawaii. I'm a beginner, woman in her early 40s, average fitness for my age, and wanted to learn enough to practice on my own. For our 1.5 hour lesson, he was focused and committed in seeing me improve, making adjustments, identifying issues, and coming up with different exercises (in the water) to work on an isolated issue. He was also great at challenging me just a tad beyond my comfort level, showing me new techniques, as I progressed through the lesson. I expected that the best I could do was paddle, catch a wave, and ride to the beach with a shred of dignity. We did more. Terrific lesson. Patient, committed, and tenacious teacher! He's taught for years and it really shows.
