  Unum is the worst! It is bad enough that you have a situation that requires disability but makes it more so when the company handling your claim is completely incompetent.
  I did not deal directly with the San Diego office to my knowledge.
  As part of my employee benefits, the company I work for uses Unum as an intermediary for FMLA and SDI. I filed a claim through their website and followed up with them. I had surgery. My surgeon's team provided the physician's statement. I received a call from Unum on the day of my surgery which I returned the following day. They needed my employer's statement. I followed up with my Benefits Manager and HR. There was no record of this being sent to the company. After two weeks my Benefits Manager discovered the request had been sent to the wrong company. Not sure how that happened when the company's name was all over everything. It took almost 2 weeks for them to approve my claim. By this time a month had gone by and I was back at work. The claim payment made no sense so I followed up again and found out Unum made a determination based on incorrect information that they never verified with anyone. That took another 3 days and multiple phone calls. Finally it was corrected and the payment was requested. We are now at week 6 since my surgery and the overnight payment was not sent overnight.
  I would not recommend them. I will never work with them again. I will make sure to post this everywhere so other people don't wind up in the same nightmare. As a claimant, you would be better off dealing with disability or FMLA on your own.
